Hello;

I am adding a #4 sponge filter to my 75G, which already has a canister filter. The Air pump instructions (Fusion 400) say to locate the pump 12" above the aquarium, and use a check valve.

However, other brands of pumps say to locate the pump above the tank, or lower than the tank if a check valve is used.

Is this a case of over-cautiousness, or are air pumps prone to fail and siphon off the tank contents?

What do you do?

Is it possible or necessary to use 2 check valves?

I always locate my pump above the highest tank. It is unlikely that a pump will reverse when it restarts after a power failure. In the old days with piston pumps this was known to happen on the odd occasion. I would definitely use a check vale if the pump is located below the highest tank. Some check valve require a  fair amount of pressure to hold them open. They could stop a pump with low pressure from operating.

I once had a pump die and SOMEHOW it back siphoned about 100 gallons of water onto the floor.  Was great fun.
