Well I've been throwing dried oak leaves into one of my tanks all winter and it's been awesome. Water gets a nice natural colour and it softens it very marginally. The cories and other small fish love hiding in and chewing in them. People go all crazy for dried leaves we really don't have in Canada yet oak which is pretty abundant is so over looked. I bet pretty much anyone at least in the eastern provinces can easily get bags of dried leaves by going to a park in the fall. Free aquarium stuff is always the best, usually looks more natural too!

Oak, Elm and Beech leaves are all easy to get and make the water acidic. Even the bark has been used. Buying exotic leaves from other countries is silly. They all achieve the same end results.

I just bought a piece of property that is about 70% oak on it, its 20 acres, NO shortage of oak or beech leaves.

Yep still in Minden area.  Will be a few years until building starts.  Hopefully I'll be able to setup more tanks at that time again :)   Water conditions will be a lot more favourable for plecos, soft and lower ph.
