The best pump on the market is the Linear Piston. It is completely silent and mine has been running for the past 10 years. Check it out they come in all sizes.

+1 on the above, but if your on a budget the jehmco diaphragm pumps work really well. I can't speak on 10 years of longevity but mine has been running almost two years for my 125, 75, 40, and 10 gallon. Service at jehmco is also great!

cool, thanks for the tips guys.

I should have also asked about venturi powerheads and if there are stronger/more reliable ones on the market then the maxi jets which I've found over the past few years to be pieces of shit lol, pardon my french

I've been running a Alita air pump for 5 years straight with no issues at all, also very quiet (actually in my office I can hear a stupid pump going in a 10g tank over the alita on my 300g). - http://www.alita.com/airpump/  i've been using this one (around 4100 from kensfish.com) - http://www.alita.com.../pi_006u_en.php

Good pumps are pricey, but you get what you pay for.

With the pumps I've had a few of all of them crap out so far.  I think the better ones are the ones the salt guys use, big $

I use the Alita AL-15 to run a dozen air stones. Many at 2' depth. Highly recommend it. Nice and quiet, air to spare.
